FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A four-run third inning helped the Eckerd softball team snap a losing streak as the Tritons took the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader from Nova Southeastern, 5-3, before losing the finale, 5-1.
Ally Costa,
Kaylin Kramer, and
Kassy Torres each drove in runs during the third inning as Eckerd took a 5-1 lead. The Sharks got a run back in the third and again in the fifth but
Nikole Van Gennep retired the last six batters of the game to seal the win.
In the finale, NSU scored twice in the first and three times in the fifth while Miriam Schmoll earned her second win of the series.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
- Kramer delivered in the top of the first with two outs, sending a triple into right field that scored Ally Costa from first base.
- A leadoff error in the bottom of the second turned into a run for the Sharks as they tied the game at 1-1.
- Eckerd's first six batters of the third inning reached base safely. After an Avery Wakefield walk and a Van Gennep double, Costa lined a single into left that scored Wakefield. Kramer later drew a bases-loaded walk before Torres capped the inning with a two-run single.
- NSU scored a run in the third and another in the fifth aided by an error. Â Van Gennep stranded two in the fifth and after a leadoff single in the sixth, retired the next six batters to end the game.
Game 2
- Nova Southeastern took a 2-0 lead after one inning thanks to a two-out, two-run double.
- Meredith McGinnis cut the deficit in half in the top of the second with a leadoff homerun, her second of the season.
- Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth when the Sharks plated three runs after the first four batters of the inning reached base. Â NSU took advantage of three Triton errors in the inning.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The first-game win snapped a 12-game losing skid for Eckerd. The Tritons have played some of the SSC's top teams during the streak.
- McGinnis's homerun in the second game was her first since opening day. She was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader.
- Kramer's first-inning triple in game one was her fourth of the season, the most by a Triton since Chelsea Jeffares had four in 2014.
