Tritons Top Lynn in Pitchers’ Duel

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Similar to the series opener last weekend, the Eckerd softball team faced another pitchers' duel in Friday night's opener with Lynn. This time Eckerd took the 1-0 win after a run in the first winning while Nikole Van Gennep kept the Knights' bats at bay tossing the 16th shutout of her career.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 1, Lynn 0
Records: Eckerd 13-27 (5-17 SSC); Lynn 15-29 (5-17 SSC)
WP: Van Gennep (8-16) LP: Jameston (4-13)

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Tritons wasted little time getting on the board in the opening frame. Van Gennep and Ally Costa hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before Skylar Redish roped a single off the right field wall to bring in Van Gennep.
  • Van Gennep worked strongly in the circle keeping the Knights off the board. She worked around runners in scoring position in the second through fifth innings but left the runners stranded each time. Lynn's best scoring opportunity came in the second inning as Natalie Costero hit a single to right looking to score the runner from second but Hannah Famiano cut down the runner at the plate to end the inning.
  • After the first inning, Eckerd struggled offensively collecting just two more hits as Kassy Torres singled in the fourth and Costa singled in the sixth.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Costa was the only Triton to record multiple hits with two hits in the series opener.
  • Van Gennep earned her eighth with of the season allowing seven hits and no runs over seven innings. It was the 16th shutout of her career and fourth of the season.
  • The win breaks a five-game losing skid against Lynn.
