McCollough Breaks Two Records, Tritons Split With Saint Leo

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Dillon McCollough broke two records in one outstanding performance, but Saint Leo earned a split in Thursday's doubleheader at the Turley Athletic Complex after winning the nightcap.

McCollough struck out 17 batters in the opener and in doing so broke the program's single-season and career strikeout watermarks. However, he did not factor into the decision as the game went into extra innings where Sam Cochrane ended it in the 10th inning with a walkoff homerun.

In the second game, Saint Leo used a three-run first and a four-run seventh to do the majority of its damage as the Tritons played from behind for the entire game. A Justin Glover homer in the fourth cut the deficit down to a run but the Lions pulled back ahead with a big seventh inning.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • McCollough and McCabe Sargent engaged in a pitchers duel from the start. The Lions' only run came in the top of third on a Jared Morello two-out single that scored Derek Gibree from second.
  • Eckerd answered in the bottom of the fourth. After Sam Cochrane and Justin Glover singles put runners on the corners with two outs, Mitch Donofrio lined the first pitch of his at-bat into left field to bring in Cochrane and tie the score.
  • The Tritons stranded a runner at third in the fifth inning before Saint Leo saw its last real chance come in the sixth. A single, double, and walk loaded the bases with one out and Saint Leo's cleanup hitter, Brett Coffel, coming to the plate. McCollough responded by striking out both Coffel and Mike Wyman to escape the jam.
  • Eckerd advanced runners to third in the eighth and ninth innings but left both stranded. Meanwhile, Peyton Isaacson singled to lead off the ninth for Saint Leo before McCollough fanned the next three batters.
  • Chase Achuff entered in relief in the 10th, pitching a scoreless inning. Two batters into the bottom of the frame, Cochrane launched a walkoff homerun over the fence in right-center.
Game 2
  • The Lions jumped ahead early taking advantage of three straight walks to start the game. Coffel lofted a double into left field to score two runs, and Coumoulos followed with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
  • Saint Leo's Danny Torres connected on a two-run homerun in the top of the third to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • Eckerd took advantage of two SLU errors in the bottom of the third to load the bases. Garrett Hiott singled home Donofrio and Mitch Calandra followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Glover pulled Eckerd within one in the fourth with a two-run blast to right field.
  • SLU built a cushion over the next three innings with a run in the fifth, another in the sixth, and four in the seventh. Five of the six runs were unearned.
  • The Tritons scored in the sixth on an RBI double by Keith Leavitt, Jr., and in the seventh when an errant throw on a pickoff attempt allowed Calandra to score from second.
  • After Ryan Lashley retired the side in order in the eighth, EC scored two more runs with two outs on a double by Hiott and single by Calandra to cut the deficit to 11-8.
  • Isaacson retired the Tritons in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • McCollough's 17 strikeouts were a new career high and gave him both the single-season and career strikeout records in EC program history. He surpassed Jim Mecir for the single-season record in the fourth inning and ended the day with 130 strikeouts.  He moved past Joey Cuda in the ninth with his 15th strikeout on the career list and now sits at 389.
  • Cochrane, Nick Conti, and Nick Arrivo all had two hits in the opener.
  • Glover extended his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest this season by any Triton. Hiott's streak ended at 11 in the opener. Glover also blasted his team-leading ninth homerun in the second, moving him into a tie for ninth all-time at Eckerd.
  • After going hitless in the opener, Calandra had a pair of singles in the second game to move him within two hits of the Eckerd career record.
