MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - After scoring 11 runs in both ends of a Thursday doubleheader, the Eckerd softball team scored 11 times in the first inning of Friday's series finale at Barry University.
The Tritons sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first with the inning capped by a grand slam by
Kaylin Kramer. Â Eckerd cooled off afterward but it was more than enough as
Nikole Van Gennep limited the Bucs to only one run over five innings.
The sweep was Eckerd's second in as many weeks.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 11, Barry 1 (5 innings)
WP: Van Gennep (11-16) Â

KEY MOMENTS
- Van Gennep led off the game with a double and quickly came around to score on an Ally Costa single. After the Bucs recorded two outs, the Tritons exploded for 10 more runs before Andree Johnson finally got out of the inning. A wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk, and a fielder's choice brought in three runs before a two-run single by Van Gennep, another RBI single by Costa, and a grand slam by Kaylin Kramer finished the scoring outburst.
- Barry's Lynsey Duncan led off the bottom of the first with a double but was quickly doubled off on a line drive snagged by Van Gennep.
- The Bucs were on the verge of a big inning in the third after opening the frame with four straight singles but only ended with one run to show for it thanks in large part to a 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Van Gennep, Costa, and Kramer each had two hits in the first inning and combined to drive in eight of the team's 11 runs.
- Eckerd's 11-run first inning was the most runs scored in an inning by a Triton team since March 2, 2016, when EC scored 12 runs in the first against Lake Superior State (Mich.).
- Van Gennep had 10 RBIs in the series, giving her 36 for the season which ranks in a tie for fourth-most in program history. She also moved into third all-time in career hits (188).
- Skylar Redish was hit by a pitch twice, marking the ninth and 10th times this season for the freshman to get plunked. It's the most in a season for a Triton since Amber Hay was hit 11 times in 2015.
