MELBOURNE, Fla. - In the final series of the season for the Eckerd softball team,
Nikole Van Gennep found herself in a pair of pitchers duels at No. 5 Florida Tech.
Van Gennep stranded a combined 18 runners in the two games but the Panthers managed a run in each game while Morgan Murphy and Jordan Lawlis kept the Tritons scoreless for the day on the way to two 1-0 victories.
Ally Costa broke up a Murphy no-hitter in the sixth inning of the opener and the Tritons put two runners aboard in the seventh but left both stranded.
The Panthers then won the second game on a walk-off error.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
- FIT's Melanie Murphy was perfect through four innings before hitting Kaylin Kramer to lead off the top of the fifth. Â Kassy Torres reached after an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch to reach second and third with no outs. However, Murphy got two strikeouts and a pop-up to end the threat.
- Meanwhile, Van Gennep continually pitched out of jams in the first five innings stranding 10 Panthers along the way.
- Ally Costa broke up Murphy's no-hit bid with two outs in the top of the sixth on a single to left center.
- Florida Tech finally pushed run across in the bottom of the sixth. After three straight one-out singles, Jaden Kline lofted a sacrifice fly into right field to bring in Mikayla Wessel from third.
- The Tritons threatened in the top of the seventh with a pair of two-out singles by Meredith McGinnis and Avery Wakefield, but Murphy got a fly ball to right to end the game.
Game 2
- As with the first game, the second was a pitchers' duel as well with neither team scoring through the first five innings.
- Eckerd had chances to score in the fifth and sixth innings. The Tritons put two aboard with one out in the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Jordan Lawlis pitched out of both jams.
- Meanwhile, the Panthers had their chances early including loading the bases in the second but Van Gennep got a grounder to end the inning.
- Wessel led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and came around to score the winning run on a throwing error by Torres after a sacrifice bunt attempt.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Eckerd's six-game winning streak came to an end in the opener.
- With her two starts today, Van Gennep tied the Eckerd softball program record for games pitched with 142.
- McGinnis led the Tritons at the plate with three hits on the day including a 2-for-2 performance in the finale.
- Van Gennep allowed only one earned run in 13 innings and struck out five.
