ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the spring in dominant fashion, sweeping Davis & Elkins (W.V.) at the Bullard Courts on Thursday, 7-0.
The Tritons (1-5) only lost one set in the match.
Eckerd earned the doubles point after
Cassidy Lear and
Angelina Kossoff quickly won, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles and
Taylor Selby and
MaryAnn Aaron won at the No. 1 spot, 6-2.
Playing together for the first time this spring,
Theo Schultz and
Bailey Koronich fell behind, 3-0, at No. 2 doubles but came back to win, 6-4.
EC clinched the match victory after the top three singles matches were done. Selby overcame a 7-5 loss in the first set to win the second, 6-1, and the tiebreaker, 10-5, in her spring singles debut. Aaron outlasted Laura Vargas at No. 2 singles in the first set, 7-6 (5), before winning the second set, 6-3.
Koronich (6-2, 6-3), Schultz (6-4, 6-4), Lear (6-2, 6-1), and Kossoff (6-0, 6-0) all had little trouble in their singles matches as Eckerd finished the sweep.
The team plays again on Friday, hosting John Carroll (Ohio) University at 2:00 PM.
