Tritons Fall to Malone in Midweek Matchup

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Malone (Ohio) University jumped out to an early lead while the Triton bats struggled to get going until the seventh inning as the Eckerd baseball team dropped a neutral site game to the Pioneers on Wednesday night.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Malone took an early 1-0 lead following a run in the opening frame. The Pioneers' leadoff batter reached on an error and scored later in the inning following a groundout to first.
  • The Pioneers looked to threaten again in the second inning loading the bases with no outs but the Eckerd defense was able to turn a double play and get  a groundout to end the inning.
  • Malone tacked on another run in the third inning following an RBI single to right field.
  • The Pioneers added three more runs in the sixth inning via a two-run double and RBI single before adding another run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk. 
  • Eckerd got a run back in the seventh inning as Sam Cochrane led off the inning with a single to left before stealing second and scoring on an RBI single to left by Jake Romine.
  • Eckerd pushed another run across in the eighth. Mitch Calandra hit an RBI double to centerfield scoring Chase Achuff, who reached on a single.  
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Cochrane and Nick Arrivo led Eckerd with two hits apiece.
  • Conti led off the fourth inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and reached base streak to 15 games. Garrett Hiott led off the game with a walk extending his reached base streak to 18 games while Cochrane extends his reached base streak to 15 games as well.
  • The game featured a slightly different starting infield for the Tritons. Hiott shifted from centerfield to make his first career appearance at third base while Conti started at shortstop. Hiott has played the infield before with a combined 55 games at shortstop over his first two seasons while Conti last played shortstop at the beginning of his junior season.
  • Seven Triton pitchers made appearances on the mound. Ryan Lashley got the start taking the loss following one earned run over three innings. Jarid Salisbury, Joey Favetta, and Dillon McCollough all threw scoreless innings while Cameron Lanzilli, Brandon Castle, and Kyle Durham each worked in relief as well.
