Tritons Lock Down Barry for Fifth Straight Win

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Payback may not have been on the minds of the Eckerd women's basketball team in Saturday's game against Barry, but the result certainly made a statement regardless as the Tritons avenged a December loss to the Buccaneers via a 37-point win in the McArthur Center on Saturday.

A 13-2 run that began in the first quarter and ended in the second pushed Eckerd's lead to 15 points, and from there the Tritons kept adding to it as the game progressed.

Defense was a major factor as Eckerd held Barry to just 22.6 percent shooting from the floor.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 80, Barry 43
Records: Eckerd 16-6 (10-4 SSC); Barry 7-15 (5-10 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • A Yarden Danan 3-pointer one minute into the game gave Eckerd a lead it carried for the next 39 minutes. The Tritons raced out to a 12-3 lead only to see Barry pull within four at 13-9 with 4:25 to go in the quarter.
  • A steal by Mikayla Kuehne led to a layup by Zoe Richards that started a 13-2 run spanning into the second quarter.  Octavia Loll scored the first six points of the second quarter, pushing the lead to 26-11 with 5:00 left until halftime. The Tritons later scored the last five points of the half and took a 35-17 lead into the break.
  • After a free throw by Barry's Ida Andersson, the Tritons rolled off nine unanswered points finished by a 3-pointer from Abby Whiteye as the lead grew to 26.  The Bucs pulled back within 20 only to see Eckerd close the third quarter on an 8-0 run.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by Danan and Zoe Richards opened the fourth quarter, and Eckerd led by as many as 40 points on the way to the convincing win.
