ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After struggling to score runs in the first two games of the season, the Eckerd baseball team had no such problem on Sunday.
The Tritons scored five times in the first inning and plated 10 runs through four on the way to taking the final game of the opening weekend series from Shorter (Ga.), 13-4, at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Drew Martin, meanwhile, threw a solid five innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and working around four walks and two hit batters.

KEY MOMENTS
- After Martin escaped a jam in the top of the first, the Tritons scored five times in the bottom of the inning. Nick Conti got things going with a two-run single and three batters later, Santos Grande came within inches of a grand slam as his drive to right-center hit the top of the fence. Â It instead turned into a two-run single, and Eckerd added one more run thanks to a two-out error by the Hawks.
- Chase Achuff and Garrett Hiott opened the second inning with back-to-back singles, setting the table for Mitch Calandra to bring them home with a two-run triple. Conti then added his third RBI with a single up the middle that scored Calandra.
- Keith Leavitt, Jr., blasted a solo home run in the third to make it a 9-0 lead. In the fourth, Grande delivered another RBI single followed by an RBI groundout by Jake Romine to extend Eckerd's lead to 11-0.
- Shorter was held scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Hawks scored four times on three hits.
- Leavitt, Jr., led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Eckerd added a final run in the eighth on a two-out RBI double by Jake Romine.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Hiott nearly had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with hits in his first four at-bats.
- Grande came within just a couple of feet of hitting two home runs. After his single in the first that hit the top of the fence, Grande was robbed at the wall in right field by Joshua Meyers.
- Conti, Grande, and Leavitt each had two hits for Eckerd. Conti and Grande also had three RBIs apiece.
- Eckerd's early offensive prowess forced Shorter to use four pitchers in the first two innings.
