Tritons Blank Florida Southern in Series Opener

ST.  PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd softball team used a hot start  with three runs over the first two innings while Nikole Van Gennep kept the Moccasins bats at bay allowing just three hits as the Tritons picked up an important conference win in the series opener against Florida Southern.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd got off to a fast start loading the bases with one out following three singles from Kaylin Kramer, Hannah Famiano, and Skylar Redish. Kassy Torres hit a shot through the left side to bring in Kramer for an early lead. Eckerd kept the bases loaded looking to continue to threaten early but FSC was able to get a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam.
  • The Tritons continued their offensive surge in the next frame as Kramer roped a two-run triple down the right field line scoring Meredith McGinnis and Jessica Wilson, who walked and singled to lead off the inning.
  • Van Gennep kept the Florida Southern bats off balance in the circle throughout the game. After allowing the second batter of the game to reach on a hit by pitch, she retired 10 of the next 11 batters allowing just one hit in the stretch.
  • Eckerd tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning as Kayelee Newstrom hit a double off the wall in left bringing in Torres, who reached on a single.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Van Gennep picked up her fourth win of the season shutting out the Moccasins with seven strikeouts allowing just three hits. The shutout was the third of the season for Van Gennep and 15th of her career. 
  • Kramer, Torres, and Wilson led Eckerd at the plate with two hits each while Kramer had two RBIs.
  • Eckerd recorded a season-high 10 hits in the win while giving up a season-low three hits.
