Tritons Split Doubleheader, Take Series From Florida Southern

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd softball team took the opening game of a Friday doubleheader from Florida Southern to claim the series, and later came within a few feet of a series sweep.

Behind 5-2/3 no-hit innings and a two-run homerun from Nikole Van Gennep, the Tritons won the opener, 4-3, after taking the first game of the series on Thursday.

The nightcap went into extra innings, where the Moccasins scored twice in the top of the eighth. Eckerd put the two runners aboard in the bottom of the inning and Kayelee Newstrom hit a towering fly ball to left-center field with two outs but the ball was caught against the fence for the final out of the game.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • A hit batter and a failed force attempt put runners on first and second with no outs for Eckerd in the bottom of the second. Two batters later, Newstrom launched a shot to left field that just missed clearing the fence, instead resulting in a two-run double for a 2-0 Eckerd lead.
  • The Tritons added two more in the third after Hannah Famiano led off with a single and Van Gennep followed with a homerun to straightaway center on an 0-2 count.
  • Van Gennep, meanwhile, was untouchable in the circle. An error is all that kept her from being perfect through the first five innings. She issued a leadoff walk in the sixth, then retired the next two batters before Celia Higgins broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single to center.
  • The Mocs drew another leadoff walk in the seventh, and Maddi Connor followed with a two-run homerun to left, narrowing the gap to 4-3. Van Gennep, however, retired the next three batters to end the game.
Game 2
  • The Mocs jumped on Madison Saltzman early with three hits from the first four batters. Saltzman settled down afterward but FSC was able to score twice in the top of the first to take their first lead of the series.
  • Eckerd got a run back in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Skylar Redish.
  • Florida Southern loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but Saltzman was able to retire the next three batters and leave all three runners stranded.
  • The Tritons tied the game in the second on another two-out RBI, this time from Famiano.
  • Neither team scored over the next five innings. Saltzman again left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded runners on the corners in the sixth.
  • An infield single by Alex Mace opened the eighth and ended the night in the circle for Saltzman. Van Gennep entered in relief, giving up a walk to Makayla Deuberry and a pinch-hit single to Jenna Weldon that scored Mace from second. Jadin Dewith's groundout brought in another run before Van Gennep recorded a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.
  • Singles by Van Gennep and Kassy Torres put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth for Eckerd. After Van Gennep was erased on a fielder's choice, Newstrom hit a high fly ball into the left-center alley. Though it looked as if it had a chance to clear the wall, Dewith caught it against the fence for the final out.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • The series win over Florida Southern was Eckerd's first since 2015.
  • Van Gennep's homerun in the first game of the day was the first allowed by an FSC pitcher this season.
  • Florida Southern was held scoreless in the first 12 innings of the series.
  • Saltzman's seven-plus inning outing was the longest of her career by four innings. She had previously pitched three innings three times, two as a freshman and once as a sophomore.
