Tritons Drop Doubleheader at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Embry-Riddle got on the board early in both games Saturday afternoon and Eckerd was unable to make up the difference as the Eckerd softball team dropped the final two games of the series, 5-1, and 8-2, at Embry-Riddle.

KEY MOMENTS
Game One
  • Embry-Riddle got on the board first with two runs in the opening frame. After a leadoff single, the Eagles plated the first run on an RBI double and followed with an RBI single two batters later for the second run. 
  • The Eagles added another three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The first two runs of the inning came via Triton throwing errors. Jamie Mead scored on a throwing error on an infield single and Lia Johnson scored after an error on a double steal. The final run of the inning crossed after an RBI single.
  • The Tritons got on the board in the sixth inning. Avery Wakefield led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to center and advanced to third following a Kaylin Kramer single and a wild pitch. A walk drawn by Hannah Famiano loaded the bases for Eckerd with one out as Nikole Van Gennep drove in Wakefield on a fielder's choice to shortstop.
  • The Eagles threatened again in the sixth inning loading the bases with one out but Kramer cut down a runner at the plate while Madison Saltzman coaxed a groundout to escape the jam.
Game Two
  • ERAU looked to scored early loading the bases in the first inning with two outs but Van Gennep was able to coax a groundout to end the early threat.
  • Eckerd then threatened by putting two runners aboard in the second inning after Valerie Holguin reached on a hit-by-pitch and Kassy Torres singled, but the Eagles got a fly out to end the Tritons threat.
  • Embry-Riddle took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The first run crossed on a Triton error and Hop brought in two runs with a two-RBI double.
  • Eckerd got on the board in the fourth inning. Torres ripped a single up the middle scoring Skylar Redish, who reached on a single through the right side.
  • Embry-Riddle tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Both runs scored with the bases loaded with the first on an RBI single to right and the second run on a squeeze bunt.
  • ERAU stretched its lead to 8-1 with another three runs in the fifth inning. The first run scored following a Triton throwing error as part of an Embry-Riddle double steal while two doubles scored the final two runs.
  • Famiano drew a walk to lead off the sixth inning and advanced to third following an error and a Redish fly out. Famiano then scored during Holguin's groundout to short in the next at bat.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Three Tritons made appearances in the circle in the opener. Hannah Perkins took the loss allowing two runs over three innings. Ally Costa threw two innings in relief while Saltzman tossed a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Van Gennep took the loss in the finale throwing 4.2 innings while Saltzman threw 1.2 scoreless innings.
  • Kassy Torres led Eckerd at the plate with two hits in the finale and three on the day while Valerie Holguin collected two hits over both games.
  • Famiano reached four times over both games with a single in the opener while drawing three walks.
UP NEXT
Eckerd looks to bounce back as the Tritons host Florida Southern next week for a three-game series starting with a single game Thursday at 6:00 PM.
