Tritons Run Streak to Six, Sweep Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. - The Eckerd baseball team swept its second straight series and extended its winning streak to six games, overcoming an early deficit for an 8-4 win over Albany State (Ga.) on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Rams took their first lead of the series in the second inning with two runs, then added two more in the third for a 4-1 lead. Eckerd tied the game with three runs in the fifth and went ahead for good after a four-run sixth.

A trio of relievers combined to shut down Albany State over the last six innings.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd got on the board in the top of the second, loading the bases after two walks and an error. Mitch Donofrio brought in Nick Conti on a grounder, but ASU escaped the inning without further damage.
  • The Rams took advantage of wildness by Eckerd starter Drew Martin in the second, scoring their first run as the result of two walks and two hit batters.  A second run scored on a double-play ball in the infield.
  • Martin hit the leadoff batter in the third and gave way to Jarid Salisbury. Albany State got to him early with two singles and a walk, scoring two more times to take a 4-1 lead.
  • The Tritons tied the game in the top of the fifth with three runs. Garrett Hiott's squeeze bunt scored Keith Leavitt, Jr., from third, after he reached on a leadoff error. Conti later delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the score at 4-4.
  • After Cameron Lanzilli stranded two runners in the bottom of the fifth, Santos Grande led off the top of the sixth with a solo homerun.  Leavitt, Jr., later scored on a wild pitch followed by a two-run single by Sam Cochrane with the bases loaded.
  • The Eckerd bullpen continued to work out of jams as Lanzilli stranded two more in the sixth and Ryan Lashley left the bases loaded in the seventh. Joey Favetta worked the final two innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Hiott's blazing start to his senior season continued as he went 3-for-5 in the finale.  He finished the weekend going 8-for-11 at the plate with six runs and five RBIs, raising his batting average to .500 for the year.
  • Eckerd's six-game winning streak is its longest since 2015 when the team won seven in a row from February 7-21.
  • Grande's homerun was the first of his career.

The Tritons host Ave Maria (Fla.) on Tuesday at 6:00 PM in the final non-conference contest before the SSC schedule begins next weekend.
