Tritons Breeze Past No. 25 Lindenwood, 71-52

LAKELAND, Fla. –  After a dominant first quarter, the Eckerd women's basketball team remained in control the rest of the way cruising to a 71-52 victory over No. 25 Lindenwood University (Mo.) Friday afternoon.

Octavia Loll led the Tritons with 17 points as Eckerd wrapped up play in the Florida Southern Terrace Hotel Classic.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The teams opened play in the first period by trading buckets until a layup from Abby Whiteye led to seven straight EC points to gain a 13-6 lead. Eckerd strung together an 8-0 run over the final three minutes ending the quarter with a 21-9 lead.
  • The Tritons made quick work in the second quarter, going on an early 8-4 run to take a 16 point advantage. With just over two minutes remaining in the half, Zoe Richards made a pair of free throws followed by a jumper by Whiteye as EC took a 35-17 lead. Lindenwood answered with five points before the end of the quarter as Eckerd entered the half up 35-22.
  • Richards laid in the first two baskets of the third quarter for the Tritons and Mikayla Kuehne followed with a jumper. Eckerd followed with a run of 10 consecutive points before ending the quarter with a 20 point lead (55-35). ​​​​​​​
  • Loll opened the fourth by knocking down a 3-pointer to take a 23-point lead. Eneritz Larranaga laid in a basket and followed with a triple as EC took their largest lead of the game with 25 at the 4:46 mark. Lindenwood's Kallie Bildner put in a basket to send the Lions on an 8-3 run to end the game.
 
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Loll led the Tritons with 17 points, followed by Whiteye and Larranaga, adding 15 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Whiteye led EC on the boards with eight. Maya Price and Loll pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively.
  • Whiteye and Larranaga both had a career-high four steals. 
  • Eckerd scored 21 points off of turnovers compared to Lindenwood's 11.
  • After 31 turnovers in yesterday's loss, EC committed just 13 today. 
  • The Tritons had 11 fast break points while Lindenwood only had two.
QUOTABLE 
"We started the game with great energy, especially on the defensive end. We stayed on the attack offensively with another balanced attack throughout the game, but ultimately I thought our defense was the difference today," said head coach Paul Honsinger. "It was a great win moving into the holiday break."
 
UP NEXT
Eckerd is back in action in the new year as they head to Fort Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern on January 2 at 5:30 PM.
