Tritons End Season with Draw Against Nova Southeastern

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd women's soccer team ended its season with a 1-1 draw against Nova Southeastern Friday night at Johnson Field.

After a late Sharks goal, Sophia Kopko scored her first goal of the season to tie the match just before the end of regulation. Neither team found the back of the net in overtime, resulting in a draw.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Tritons started aggressively with a shot from Kaliya Eutsey just two and a half minutes into the match that just missed over the top of the goal.
  • Eckerd put two more shots on frame in the next 17 minutes, but NSU keeper Shannon Hearty kept the score even.
  • Nova Southeastern registered seven shots in the first half, but keeper Casey Winn and the Triton defense turned them all away.
  • The Sharks started the second half off with a quick shot on goal from Dejah Holman to the top left of the net in the 47th minute, but the attempt couldn't get passed Winn.
  • Nova Southeastern gained momentum firing off four more shots in the next six minutes. The Sharks finally found the back of the net in the 69th minute after Chama Silva sent in a corner kick towards the penalty kick mark, where  Emma Heikkila headed it in to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Tritons struck back 14 minutes later when Kopko buried a free-kick from the left side into the top of the net to tie the game at 1-1 just before the end of regulation.
  • Nova Southeastern had three chances to score in the first overtime, but Winn was able to turn back each shot and keep EC alive.
  • Emily O'Connell took the only shot in the second overtime, missing wide right as the clock ran out.

NOTES AND NUMBERS

  • Kopko's game-tying goal was her first goal of the season.
  • Winn faced 21 shots while making 11 saves.
  • The match marks the end of the careers of Eckerd's two seniors Casey Winn and Madison Dilgard.
