Honsinger Wins 200th Game as Tritons Best Rollins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Eckerd head coach Paul Honsinger collected his 200th career victory as the Tritons women's basketball team took down Rollins with a near wire-to-wire win at the McArthur Center on Saturday afternoon.

Eckerd leaned on defense throughout the first half, limiting Rollins to 20 points and 32.1 percent shooting, to take a 19-point lead into halftime.  The Tritons struggled with a cold stretch of their own in the fourth period as the Tars pulled within 11, but a 10-0 run quickly dashed any further hopes of a Rollins comeback.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 75, Rollins 52
Records: Eckerd 10-4 (5-2 SSC); Rollins 8-6 (5-3 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Rollins scored the game's opening bucket, but that's the last lead Eckerd allowed as an Octavia Loll 3-pointer put the Tritons on top for good moments later.  Eckerd continued on an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to take an 11-3 lead with just under four minutes to go and closed the quarter with a 15-7 advantage.
  • The two teams traded baskets in the first few minutes of the second quarter with Eckerd holding a 12-point lead at the 7:00 mark. Eckerd went scoreless over the next four minutes while the Tars cut the Tritons' lead to seven points but caught fire at the end of the half, going on a 16-4 run over the final four minutes to take a 19-point lead into the break.
  • The teams again traded baskets over the first two minutes of the second half before Eckerd went on an 8-0 run to stretch its lead to 23 points with under five minutes left. Eckerd's offense quieted down slightly in the second half of the quarter but took a 56-36 lead into the final period.
  • Rollins went on an 11-2 run over the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter to trim the Tritons' lead to 11 before Eckerd responded with a 10-0 run to pull back ahead by 20 points and effectively put the game out of reach for the visitors.
