ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd men's soccer team controlled the majority of its Sunshine State Conference home opener on Wednesday against the University of Tampa, but a sluggish start gave the Spartans enough time to build an early lead that held up until the end.
Tampa scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the match, then held off a flurry of Eckerd chances to score a 2-1 victory at Johnson Field.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Tampa 2, Eckerd 1
Records: Eckerd 2-4-1 (0-2 SSC), Tampa 1-2-3 (1-1 SSC)
KEY MOMENTS
- After an early Eckerd chance sailed wide, the Spartans converted on their first opportunity which came in the 7th minute. Â Till Neumann crossed a ball from the right side into the box where Marcel Salokat one-touched it into the net.
- Two minutes later, Tampa struck again. Julius Becker crossed the ball from the left side to Salokot in the center of the box. Â Salokat quickly passed the ball to Juancho Fernandez running to left post and Fernandez finished into the right-side netting.
- David Ormiston stopped two Fernandez shots later in the half and momentum soon began to swing toward Eckerd. Â The Tritons took seven shots in the final 24 minutes while holding UT without an attempt, but were unable to convert.
- Eckerd finally broke through early in the second half. Shortly after checking into the match, Pedro Galvao broke free down the right side and slotted a pass to Agustin Pertusso running toward right post. Â Pertusso deftly fired the ball past a diving Jake Richards to pull EC within a goal of the lead.
- The Tritons had several near-misses while looking for an equalizer but couldn't find the net again.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Eckerd outshot Tampa for the match, 19-10, and 7-4 in shots on goal.
- Pertusso's goal was his third of the season.
QUOTABLE
"We had a poor and naive start to the game, and Tampa was clinical with its first two attacks. Â We were shell-shocked. Â Then we played arguably the best soccer we have played this year for the next 80 minutes and created plenty of opportunities to tie or win the game. Â We want to say thanks to our fellow students for coming out tonight in such big support. Â The crowd was great." - EC head coach
Ian Cameron
