Barry Scores Late to Take Series Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A pair of dueling late rallies didn't end in favor of the Eckerd softball team on Friday, as Barry University scored in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 6-4 win in the opening game of a weekend conference series.

After the Bucs went ahead 3-0 after four innings, Eckerd rallied to tie the game in the fifth and take the lead in the sixth.  But Barry tied the game in the seventh and, after the Tritons left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, scored twice in the eighth to claim the win.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Barry 6, Eckerd 4 (8 innings)
Records: Eckerd 17-22 (8-14 SSC), Barry 20-26 (5-17 SSC)
WP: Santos (7-14)  LP: Gaburo (2-5)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings before Barry broke through in the fourth.  A walk and an error opened the inning, soon to be followed by a two-run double by Lynsey Duncan.  Christie Falcon added another run with a two-out RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Tritons tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs for Crystal Garcia who promptly emptied them with a bases-clearing double.  Janna Gaburo almost put Eckerd ahead but her grounder up the middle was deflected off the glove of Barry pitcher Geneva Santos, slowing the ball down enough to record the final out.
  • Barry threatened in the top of the sixth with a runner on third and one out, but Eckerd escaped the inning on a double play that ended with Kaleigh Floyd cutting down a tagging runner at home plate.
  • Eckerd scored again with two outs in the sixth to take the lead. Carrie Shere singled to right and took two extra bases on an error, setting the stage for Kayelee Newstrom to drive her in with a single up the middle.
  • Barry tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, and EC left the bases loaded in the home half of the inning.
  • The Bucs went back ahead in the eighth after the first three runners reached base.  The two go-ahead runs scored on a Falcon single, with the second run coming in on an error following the hit.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Nikole Van Gennep started in the circle but left with one out in the sixth after a line drive back up the middle deflected off her glove and grazed her face. She stayed in the lineup in the designated player spot.
  • Garcia's bases-loaded double gave her a team-leading 22 RBIs for the season.
  • Kaleigh Floyd had two hits, extending her hitting streak to six games.
UP NEXT
The two teams finish the weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
