ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team saw its season come to an end hosting one of the nation's top teams on Wednesday as No. 9 Saint Leo took a 9-0 win.
The Lions (15-5, 6-3 SSC) moved into a tie for third in the conference standings as the SSC tournament approaches.
Isabella Wong and
Cassidy Lear dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles to Madeleine Gauthier and Fabiola Cardenas that completed a Saint Leo doubles sweep. Â Marta Vicens Miguel and Andrada Gordan, ranked No. 21 in the country, defeated
Taylor Selby and
Joyce Fields, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles while
MaryAnn Aaron and
Bailey Koronich lost by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the 29th-ranked Miguel was just as stout in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Selby. Â Wong battled in the No. 5 position against Gordan, rebounding from a 6-0 loss in the first set to take three games in the second.
Eckerd's season ends at 4-13 overall.
The match brought to a close the Triton careers of seniors Wong and
Laurence Bourgault. Â The pair teamed for two doubles wins this season while Bourgault posted four victories in singles.
