Tritons Win Rubber Game to Take Series From Barry

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team split a doubleheader at Barry on Friday taking the series after winning the finale, 7-5.

After Eckerd took Thursday night's opener, the Buccaneers won the first game on Saturday while doing most of its damage in the third and fourth innings.  The Tritons bounced in the rubber game to build a 5-1 lead through six innings before Jack Iervolino closed the door in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run at the plate.

KEY MOMENTS
Game 1
  • Eckerd took a lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by Keith Leavitt, Jr.
  • Barry tied the game at 1-1 with a single that followed two walks in the second inning.
  • The Tritons put runners at first and third with no outs in the top of the third but only mustered one run on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Hiott.
  • The Buccaneers got two home runs in the bottom of the third, a solo shot by Arrison Perez and a two-run blast by Ryan Baldwin for a 4-2 lead.  Barry then added five more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
  • Chase Achuff delivered a two-run double in the seventh and threatened again in both the eighth and ninth innings, but stranded two runners in each frame.
Game 2
  • The Bucs scored in the bottom of the first without getting hit.  After two walks and a double steal, Baldwin drove in the runner from third via a sacrifice fly.
  • Eckerd took the lead in the top of the third inning via a two-out, two-run double by Achuff.
  • The Tritons added three more runs in the sixth, starting with an RBI single from Shane LeMaster. Tim Mira followed with a run-scoring groundout and Justin Glover capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • Robin Allen, meanwhile, cruised through the sixth inning, allowing only one hit and retiring 11 batters in a row beginning in the third.
  • Barry finally got to Allen again in the seventh, again taking advantage of a pair of walks.  This time, the bases were cleared on a three-run home run by Pino as the Bucs cut the lead to 5-4.
  • Leavitt, Jr. led off the top of the eighth with a solo homer, the first of four hits in the inning.  After the next two batters were retired, the trio of Mira, Glover, and Jake Romine strung together back-to-back-to-back singles with Romine's driving in Mira for a 7-4 lead.
  • Jonathan Quintana blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth before Iervolino helped get Eckerd out of the inning.
  • Iervolino stayed in the game in the ninth, striking out the first two batter before putting Escarra on via a walk on a full count to bring the tying run to the plate.  The freshman then fanned Andrew Rapoza to strike out the side and earn his first career save.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • The Tritons took the series from Barry for the second straight year, also winning 2-of-3 last season in St. Petersburg.
  • Allen fanned seven in his start, the third time this season in which the sophomore has struck out seven or more batters in a game.  He also earned his second straight win.
  • With more than a month left in the season, Eckerd has already hit more home runs (31) than during all of last season (26).

The Tritons return home next weekend to host Flagler in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
