ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Two home runs in a four-run seventh inning made the difference for the Eckerd baseball team on Friday as the Tritons defeated Flagler (Fla.) in the opener of a three-game series, 6-5, at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Keith Leavitt, Jr. led off the seventh with a solo home run before
Justin Glover put the Tritons ahead with a three-run shot later in the inning. Â
The Saints loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, moving the tying run to third base, but
Jarid Salisbury managed to get out of the jam to preserve the win.

Records: Eckerd 17-16, Flagler 26-11
WP: Lanzilli (2-0) Â
LP: Ashworth (4-5) Â
SV: Salisbury (1) Â
HR: Conti (4), Leavitt Jr. (6), Glover (5)
KEY MOMENTS
- Flagler struck early, plating two runs in the top of the first on three hits. Â The Tritons answered in the bottom of the frame, getting a leadoff home run by Nick Conti and an RBI groundout by Garrett Hiott to tie the game.
- The Saints knocked EC starter Dillon McCollough out of the game in the third inning - literally. Â A hard grounder back up the middle off the bat of Aaron Anderson caught McCollough on his pitching arm, rendering him unable to continue after throwing three pitches to the next batter. Â Flagler scored twice in the inning, taking a 4-2 lead.
- Saints starter Ryan Ashworth cruised through the second through sixth innings before Eckerd got to him again in the seventh. Â Leavitt, Jr. smashed the second pitch of the inning off the scoreboard in right field for a solo home run. Â After a Hiott single and Bryan Torres walk, Glover launched a 2-2 pitch to the opposite field for a three-run shot that put EC ahead, 6-4.
- Flagler made things a bit uncomfortable for Eckerd in the top of the ninth. Â After two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with no outs, Joey Favetta plunked Anderson to move the tying run to third base. Â Salisbury relieved Favetta, inheriting the bases loaded with no outs. Â He immediately got a double play on a line drive to Conti at second, then recorded the final out on a fly ball to Hiott in center to earn the save.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- The bullpen duo of Jack Iervolino and Cam Lanzilli were outstanding in the middle innings, affording the Tritons the opportunity to come back. Iervolino allowed two inherited runners to score in the third, but shut down Flagler in the fourth and fifth innings. Â Lanzilli then tossed three scoreless frames to get Eckerd to the ninth.
- Salisbury's save was the first of his career and Eckerd's sixth save in its last seven wins.
- Conti has hit safely in his last six games while batting .407 over the stretch.
- Leavitt, Jr. homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season. Â He also did it March 10 (vs. Lynn) and March 12 (vs. Southern New Hampshire).
