Tritons Power Past Rollins in Doubleheader Sweep

WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Eckerd softball team used plenty of power in a doubleheader sweep over Rollins Saturday afternoon taking the series from the Tars two games to one. Eckerd scored 10 of its 11 runs in both games via extra-base hits.

In the opener, Kaleigh Floyd's timely hitting backed an outstanding combined pitching performance from Ally Costa and Nikole Van Gennep. In the finale, the Eckerd bats erupted in the third inning scoring seven runs in the frame highlighted by Crystal Garcia's three-run homer to seal the win.

KEY MOMENTS
Game One
  • The first four innings were pitchers duel with neither team able to break through and push a run across. The Tars threatened in the opening frame putting runners on second and third with one out by but Ally Costa coaxed a strikeout and groundout to end the threat.
  • Eckerd broke through in the fifth inning with two runs. Carrie Shere led off the inning with a walk and was replaced at first by Kaylin Kramer on a fielders choice.  Kramer moved to second after a Kayelee Newstrom single. Floyd then ripped a double to left bringing in Kramer and Newstrom for the lead.
  • The Tritons added two more runs in the seventh inning on another Floyd two-run double, this time to center field plating Newstrom and Van Gennep who reached on an error and a walk.
  • The Tars managed to get one run in the seventh on an RBI double, but Van Gennep coaxed two groundouts to end the game and pick up the save.
Game Two
  • Eckerd broke the game open in the third inning with seven runs in the frame. Van Gennep and Floyd led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Dana Paul brought in the first run with an RBI single to right center. Garica followed in the next at-bat blasting a three-run homer to centerfield. Newstrom and Van Gennep drove in the final three runs of the inning with back-to-back doubles as Newstrom's scored two.
  • Van Gennep kept the Tars' bats off-balance as she retired 10 straight batters from the fourth through sixth innings. Rollins scored one run in the seventh inning to prevent a shutout as Cynthia Whitty drove in the run on an infield single with two outs.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Costa picked up her first career win in the opening game throwing five inning without giving up a run while Van Gennep earned her second save of the season tossing the final two innings. The pair combined for allowing just three hits in the game.
  • Van Gennep tied her career-high with eight strikeouts while earning her 11th win of the season in the finale. Her previous career-high of eight strikeouts was also set at Rollins on March 11, 2016.
  • Floyd's four RBIs in the first game were a career-high for the senior while her two hits led Eckerd in the game as well. Van Gennep, Floyd, Garcia, and Newstrom each had two hit apiece in the finale.  
  • Garcia extended her reached base streak to 10 games with hits in both games while Van Gennep has reached base in seven consecutive games.
  • Eckerd has won five of its last seven games against Rollins.

Eckerd returns to SSC action next week hosting Nova Southeastern for a three-game series with a single game Thursday at 6:00 PM.
