Comeback Lifts Rollins Past Eckerd in Series Opener

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Eckerd softball team dropped the opening game of the three-game series at Rollins, falling to a late-inning comeback on Friday night.

After an early Rollins lead, Eckerd scored three runs with the bases loaded in the third inning to go ahead, 3-1. The Tars, however, scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead while holding off the Tritons' own comeback bid in the seventh for the win.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Rollins scored early, plating one run in the opening frame. Talia Kentoffio's RBI single drove in Jordan Davis who reached on a wild pitch following a strikeout.
  • Eckerd took the lead in the third inning with three runs in the frame. Kaylin Kramer led off the inning reaching second on a wild pitch and an error after striking out. After a Nikole Van Gennep single and a walk to Kaleigh Floyd loaded the bases, Chelsea Armstrong delivered a two-run single to left-center field. A Dana Paul infield single loaded the bases again for the Tritons where Crystal Garcia drove in the third run of the inning with an infield single to the pitcher.
  • The Tars tacked on a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to trail, 3-2.
  • Rollins took the lead in the sixth inning after scoring three runs. Brandi Lint evened the score at 3-3 with a solo homerun to lead off the inning. The Tars then scored two runs taking advantage of two Tritons errors in the inning to take the lead.  
  • The Tritons' first two batters reached to lead off the seventh inning bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but the comeback fell short as Eckerd was unable to push a run across.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Van Gennep's two hits and Armstrong's two RBIs led Eckerd at the plate.
  • Van Gennep threw a complete game in the loss allowing five runs (three earned) while striking out four.
  • Garcia extended her reached base streak to eight games after her hit in the third inning. She has now recorded a hit in seven of her last eight games.

Eckerd concludes the three-game series at Rollins tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 PM.
