WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team returned to conference play on Wednesday with a trip to Palm Beach Atlantic, where the Sailfish picked up an 8-1 win.
Palm Beach Atlantic (10-8, 1-3 SSC), which is ranked 10th in the region, won all three doubles contests to take an early lead and clinched the match after winning at No. 3 and 5 singles.
Joyce Fields earned Eckerd's point when PBA's Vanessa Buchbinder retired from their match at No. 2 singles. Buchbinder won a tight first set, 6-4, and the two were knotted at 4-4 in the second.
Cassidy Lear nearly scored a win at No. 6 singles against Estefani Fernandez. Fernandez took the first set, 6-3, but Lear returned the favor in the second to force a super tiebreaker where Fernandez narrowly edged Lear, 13-11.
The path gets no easier for Eckerd (3-9, 0-6 SSC) which next faces No. 4 Lynn University on Tuesday, March 27, in Boca Raton.
