ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Triton men's tennis team opened the week with a dominant win over Franklin Pierce (N.H.) on Monday at the Bullard Courts, 8-1.
After taking a 2-1 lead following doubles play, Eckerd went on to sweep all six singles matches.
Will Stone and
Matt Spasic held off Roberto Chong and Yuval Barak for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles scoring their sixth consecutive victory. Â
Robert Vazquez and
Alejandro Vuconovic earned another point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 victory to give Eckerd the edge heading into singles play.
Eckerd (4-5) then quickly picked up five singles victories to secure the match.
Back from injury,
Connor Masella easily handled Marcus Lawrence at No. 5 singles, 6-0 and 6-2. Â Vuconovic and Vazquez then clinched the match for Eckerd with matching 6-4, 6-1 victories.
Stone and Spasic won their respective singles contests in straight sets, leaving
Alasdair Knox needing to win his No. 1 singles match to finish the day.
Knox and Chong embroiled upon a three-hour match that eventually saw Knox emerge with a win via tiebreaker in the third set. Â After Chong won the first set, 6-4, Knox fought back to claim the second, 6-3. Â The third set was a battle from the start and had to go into a tiebreaker where Knox outlasted Chong with a 7-3 win.
"We had a great win today," said EC head coach
Ben Maxwell. "We started off a little slowly in doubles but the men really picked it up in singles. Â We'll be looking to feed off this energy heading into our match against PBA."Â
The Tritons are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to face Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) in a conference contest beginning at 3:00 PM.
