Fast Start, Strong Finish Lift Northwood Past Eckerd

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Eckerd baseball team fell behind early in Monday's matchup with Northwood (Mich.) and, despite closing the gap in the fifth inning, couldn't quite catch up as the Timberwolves exploded late on the way to an 18-8 win at Osceola Heritage Park Stadium in Kissimmee.

Northwood scored 15 total runs in the first, third, and seventh innings on the way to the win.

WP: Dimitrie (5-0)  LP: Martin (1-3)  HR: Conti (2)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Things got off to a good start for Eckerd when leadoff hitter Nick Conti blasted the game's second pitch over the right field wall for a solo homerun giving EC an early 1-0 lead.  The Tritons had three more hits in the inning but had a runner cut down at the plate to end the inning.
  • Northwood jumped on Triton starter Drew Martin early scoring three times before Eckerd recorded an out after a walk and three straight doubles.  The Timberwolves added two more runs before EC escaped the inning.
  • The Northwood lead expanded to 9-1 in the third with runners scoring on a wild pitch, a double, and a two-run single.
  • The Tritons worked to make up the gap in the fifth inning, scoring five times. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Keith Leavitt, Jr. singled up the middle to drive in the first run.  A wild pitch brought in Conti for the second run and Garrett Hiott followed with an RBI groundout. Shane LeMaster then doubled home Leavitt, Jr., and later scored the final run of the frame after a throwing error on a Justin Glover infield single.
  • Northwood got a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth but the Tritons answered in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Mitch Calandra.
  • The Timberwolves put a damper on Eckerd's comeback hopes with a six-run seventh capped by a three-run homerun by Nick Palmer.  Northwood added two more runs in the eighth.  All six of NU's runs in the sixth were unearned coming after a two-out error.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • The Tritons outhit Northwood, 13-12, but Eckerd's pitching staff combined to issue 13 walks.

  • LeMaster also tallied three hits, marking the fourth time this season that the freshman has recorded three hits in a game.
