No. 24 Saint Leo Edges Tritons in Non-Conference Contest

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Playing a nationally-ranked opponent for the fourth time in the last five games, the Eckerd baseball team took an early lead at No. 24 Saint Leo on Wednesday but couldn't hold it as the Lions defeated the Tritons, 7-4, in a non-conference matchup.

After tying the game in the second, the Tritons took the lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs by Bryan Torres and Justin Glover.  But Saint Leo knotted the game in bottom of the inning and retook the lead for good in the fifth.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Chase Turner put Saint Leo on the board early with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Eckerd quickly tied the game in the top of the second. Shane LeMaster and Bryan Torres both reached base and Jake Romine brought them both home with a two-out double down the left-field line.
  • The Tritons then took the lead in the top of the fourth. After LeMaster sent a ball to the warning track, Torres cranked a solo shot over the left-field wall for his sixth home run of the season. Glover followed with a moonshot to right field giving Eckerd a 4-2 lead.
  • Coming through again with two outs, the Lions tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Lane Stancil's two-run single.  Lucas Spetsas relieved Brandon Castle and got out of the inning by striking out Aaron Portee with the bases loaded.
  • Turner hit his second home run of the game in the fifth inning to give the Lions a 5-4 lead. Saint Leo added another run before Dillon McCollough entered in relief and stranded two.
  • Zach Scott led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo blast for SLU's final run of the game.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Oscar Gordillo was brilliant in relief for Saint Leo, throwing five perfect innings in earning his fourth win of the year.
  • Castle took a no-decision in the start, going 3-2/3 innings and allowing four runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out four.
  • Three of Eckerd's five hits went for extra bases.
