Tritons Drop Doubleheader to Flagler Despite Costa's One-Hitter

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Eckerd softball team dropped a pair of road games at Flagler Wednesday night by scores of 8-1 and 3-2. Flagler scored early in the opening game while freshman Ally Costa threw another excellent game in the nightcap but fell in the seventh on a walk-off run.

In the first game, Flagler scored three runs in the opening frame while adding to the score in the fifth and sixth innings for the win.

In the finale, Costa threw her second straight outing without allowing a hit until late in the game. Costa carried a no-hitter through six innings, only surrendering one hit in the seventh. However, the Saints scored the winning run in the seventh on a Triton error.

KEY MOMENTS
Game One
  • Eckerd looked to score in the opening frame with the first two batters reaching but couldn't push a run across. The Saints then scored three times in the opening inning starting with a Natalie Murphy two-run double. Murphy later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Flagler added another two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
  • Eckerd got on the board in the sixth inning when Kaylin Kramer drove in Dana Paul on a single to right field.
  • Flagler tacked on another three runs in the sixth, the first on an RBI double with the following two runs scoring on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly.
  • Eckerd threatened in the final frame getting two runners aboard with one out but the Tritons were unable to score.
Game Two
  • Eckerd scored first taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Chelsea Armstrong doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a Crystal Garcia single. Kaleigh Floyd then drove in Armstrong on an infield single to shortstop.
  • With Costa keeping the Flagler bats quiet, Eckerd carried the 1-0 lead into the sixth inning where the Saints scored two runs to take the lead. After loading the bases on three straight walks, Flagler scored two runs taking advantage of a Triton error.
  • Costa kept Eckerd alive in the top of the seventh, leading off the inning with a solo blast to right-center field.
  • Flagler scored the winning walk-off run off an error. After a leadoff double by Cassie Patterson, she advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. With the runner on third, the Saints tried for a squeeze bunt, but the attempt missed leaving Patterson off the bag at third where the pickoff throw went wide and she scored off the error.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Garcia led Eckerd in the opener with three hits while Armstrong had two hits in the finale.
  • Garcia has now hit safely in 15 of the last 17 games after recording hits in both games tonight.
  • Costa's homerun in the seventh was the first homer of her career.
  • Despite the brilliant effort on the mound, Costa picked up the loss allowing just one hit and three runs (all unearned) over six and 1/3 innings.
