Tritons Get Solid Pitching, Hitting in Win Over Penmen

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Freshman Drew Martin threw six dominant innings while the Eckerd offense scored five times in the first, adding up to a 9-1 win over Southern New Hampshire on a windy Monday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.

The Tritons blasted two home runs before getting halfway through the order, setting the tone for a well-rounded effort.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 9, Southern New Hampshire 1
Records: Eckerd 10-10, Southern New Hampshire 9-4
WP: Martin (1-2)  HR: Chaney (3), Leavitt Jr. (3)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Jamaal Chaney gave a precursor of what was to come in the bottom of the first inning when he sent the first pitch he saw from Matthew Messier over the right-field fence.  Three batters later, it was Keith Leavitt, Jr.'s turn as he cranked a two-run blast to right field.  Bryan Torres capped the five-run inning with a two-out, two-run double.
  • Garrett Hiott delivered a two-out RBI single in the second inning to give Eckerd a 6-0 lead.
  • Meanwhile, Martin went five innings without allowing a hit.  He did hit two batters and walk three but stranded them all during those five frames.  The Penmen finally broke up the no-hit bid on an infield single with one out in the sixth and eventually scored after a pair of errors.
  • Shane LeMaster drove in runs with singles in the fifth and the seventh, and Torres added another RBI in the seventh.
  • Relievers Jarid Salisbury and Lucas Spetsas combined for three shutout innings of relief.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Southern New Hampshire's leadoff hitter was familiar with playing at the Turley Athletic Complex. Tom Buonopane, who played the last two years at Eckerd, is using his final season of eligibility with SNHU while he attends graduate school.
  • LeMaster went 3-for-4, his third three-hit game of the season.  The performance raised his average to .371.
  • Torres had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to six games. Mitch Calandra also had two hits for his sixth multi-hit performance in his last nine games.
