Tritons Display Power But Drop SSC Series to Lynn

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Eckerd baseball team dropped the final two games of the SSC series with Lynn Saturday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex. The first game remained tight in a back-and-forth contest as Eckerd ultimately fell in extra-innings before Lynn built a large lead in the finale for the win.

The opening game was almost a repeat of Friday night's game going into extra innings with the same score of 5-5. This time, however, Lynn walked away with the extra-inning win. In the finale, Lynn built a 9-2 lead over five innings. Eckerd chipped into the lead but was unable to make up the difference.

KEY MOMENTS
Game One
  • Eckerd jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the opening frame. Jamaal Chaney led off the inning with a double and scored on a sharp single to shortstop by Keith Leavitt, Jr. Garrett Hiott followed with a sacrifice fly driving in Mitch Calanda who doubled earlier.
  • Lynn evened the score in the third inning on a Gabe Martinez two-run homer and took the lead in the fourth following a RBI groundout.
  • Lynn added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI infield single to third.
  • The Tritons went to work in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to even the score at 4-4. Calandra was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a stolen base. Leavitt, Jr. then drove in Calandra with a shot to right center for the first run. Hiott tied the score in the following at-bat with a solo shot blasted over the right field fence.
  • Both teams added another run in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5 with Eckerd's coming via a Chase Achuff RBI single to right center to score Chaney.
  • Neither team was able to push the winning run across in the final two innings, forcing the game to extra innings for the second straight day. Lynn plated two runs in the 10th after a leadoff triple by Patrick Dorrian who scored later on a wild pitch and an RBI single later in the inning.
  • Eckerd nearly tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Shane LeMaster hit a sacrifice fly to right driving in Leavitt, Jr. for one run but Lynn was able to get the final out on a deep fly ball by Justin Glover.
Game Two
  • Lynn took the lead early with a run in the opening inning and added another eight runs over the next four innings to build a sizable advantage. Dorrian drove in the Fighting Knights' first two runs with a double in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the third.
  • Lynn added three runs in the third on a RBI single and two-run double.
  • The Tritons got its first run of the game in the fourth inning on a LeMaster groundout driving in Leavitt, Jr who singled to lead off the inning.
  • Lynn plated another four runs in the fifth inning on a three-run homerun and an RBI single. Lynn later scored three more runs on a Dorrian homerun in the seventh inning.
  • Eckerd chipped away at the lead courtesy of three Triton homeruns but was unable to make up the difference. Chaney hit a solo homer to left in the fifth and Calandra followed with a solo homerun in the sixth. Leavitt, Jr. smacked a two-run shot to right center in the eighth for the final of the three round-trippers.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Leavitt, Jr. and Hiott led Eckerd in the first game with three hits and two RBI's apiece while Chaney also had two hits. Calandra led the Tritons in the finale with three hits while Leavitt, Jr. had two.
  • Hiott's homer in the first game and Calandra's in the second were the first homeruns of the season for both while Chaney and Leavitt, Jr. each hit their second.
  • Both teams showcased power in the series with a combined 10 homeruns over the three games.
