Tritons Fall at Florida Southern on Walk-Off Hit

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd softball team looked as though it would be going into another extra-inning affair with Florida Southern just like the two teams have done in the past four years. However, Florida Southern denied the extra-inning contest with a walk-off single in the seventh inning on Friday night in the first game of the conference series.

Nikole Van Gennep kept the Moccasin hitters off balance for the entirety of the game, only letting one batter advance to third during the first six innings and stringing together 16 straight outs before the Mocs recorded three straight hits in the seventh.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Florida Southern 1, Eckerd 0
Records: Eckerd 3-9 (0-4 SSC), Florida Southern 7-3 (2-2 SSC)
All-Time Series: Florida Southern leads, 108-12
WP: Elhers (2-3)  LP: Van Gennep: (3-6)

KEY MOMENTS
  • After letting the first two batters of the game reach base on an error and a single, Van Gennep settled in and worked out of the inning without any damage. She allowed one more hit in the next inning before retiring the next 16 batters in a row until two outs in the seventh.
  • Van Gennep retired the first two batters in the seventh inning on a pop-up and fly out. The Moccasins then hit back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners for Makayla Dueberry. Dueberry delivered a single to centerfield driving in Alli Carroll from third for the walk-off hit.
  • Eckerd's best chances to score came in the later innings. In the fifth inning, Kayelee Newstrom singled and Crystal Garcia reached on a hit by pitch, but the Mocs were able to coax a groundout to end the inning. The Tritons put another runner aboard in the sixth on a Florida Southern error and again in the seventh on another error but Eckerd was unable to push a run across in both innings.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Van Gennep pitched 6.2 innings in the loss allowing just one run while scattering six hits.
  • Garcia and Newstrom had both of Eckerd's hits.
  • Van Gennep's eight-game hitting streak snapped, but a walk in the first inning stretched her reached base streak to nine games.
UP NEXT
