Late 3-Pointer Sinks Tritons at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - After nearly 40 minutes, Saturday's game between the Eckerd and Barry women's basketball teams came down to the final seconds.

A 3-pointer by Barry's Ida Andersson with three seconds left put the Bucs ahead by a point, and Eckerd's game-winning attempt from Yarden Danan hit front iron as Barry sneaked away with a 64-63 win in Miami Shores.

The tightly-contested affair featured six lead changes in the fourth quarter alone.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Barry 64, Eckerd 63
Records: Eckerd 5-2 (2-1 SSC), Barry 3-5 (1-2 SSC)

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd outscored Barry, 11-4, over the last five minutes of the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead.  The Bucs tied the game on three occasions in the second quarter before the Tritons rolled off seven unanswered points for a 33-26 lead just before halftime.  After a Buccaneer 3-pointer broke the drought, Octavio Loll's layup beat the horn to give EC a six-point lead at the break.
  • Barry took advantage of a Triton cold spell in the third quarter as Eckerd missed six straight shots over a four-minute span.  The Bucs, meanwhile, took advantage in the paint scoring six of its final eight points of the quarter inside.  Chelsea Johnson brought EC within two (46-44) on a steal and layup as the quarter expired.
  • Loll's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter was the first of six lead changes.  Mikalya Kuehne followed with a 3-pointer to give the Tritons a four-point lead, only to see Barry connect on back-to-back 3's as part of an 8-0 run.  Eckerd responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead with 3:05 left.
  • The drama continued in the final minute as Andersson drained a 3-pointer with 51 seconds to put Barry ahead, followed by a Johnson triple to flip the scoreboard back to Eckerd.  The Tritons forced a miss and drew a foul, but Loll missed the one of two free throws with seven seconds left, leaving the door open for Barry to take the lead on a 3-pointer.  The Bucs did just that on Andersson's second clutch basket, and Eckerd missed on its final attempt.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Johnson had one of her strongest scoring efforts of the season with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting.  Loll added 12 while Abby Whiteye had 10.
  • The Tritons struggled from behind the arc for the second straight game, going just 6-of-26 (23.1 percent).
  • Eckerd shot a season-low five free throws, making three.  The Tritons did not shoot a free throw in the first half.
  • The win for Barry was its first over Eckerd since the 2015-16 season.
QUOTABLE
"The team competed hard tonight on the road but we didn't do the little things right down the stretch when we had the lead to preserve the win.  We let one get away today and we have to learn from it moving forward." - EC head coach Paul Honsinger

UP NEXT
