Tritons Ride Hot Perimeter Shooting to Blowout Win Over Saint Leo

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd women's basketball team remedied its cold perimeter shooting from last week's loss, shooting an impressive 44.8 percent from behind the arc in a blowout win over Saint Leo to open Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday night at the McArthur Center.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Eckerd opened the game with five consecutive 3-pointers. Chelsea Johnson knocked down the first triple while Abby Whiteye and Yarden Danan each added two during the stretch, putting the Tritons up by eight at the midway point of the period. EC went on a 10-3 run over the next five minutes to close the quarter with a 25-13 lead.
  • Eckerd opened the second period on a 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back triples from Mikayla Kuehne. EC then closed the half with on a 9-3 run to carry a 47-22 lead into the half with Saint Leo's only basket coming on a half-court buzzer-beater.
  • The Tritons opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run capped by three straight Danan 3-pointers stretching the Tritons lead to 32 points. Zoe Richards converted a traditional 3-point play to open a 7-0 run, pushing Eckerd's lead to 65-32 by the end of the quarter.
  • The teams traded baskets throughout the fourth quarter with Eckerd holding over a 30-point lead through the duration of the period and ended the game with a 38-point victory.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Danan led the Tritons with 17 points while tying her career-high in 3-pointers made going 5-for-11 from behind the arc. Three other Tritons scored in double figures as Kuehne scorer a career-high 13 points, Richards added a season-high 14, and Whiteye chipped in 10.
  • Kuehne led the Tritons on the boards with seven rebounds while Whiteye grabbed six.
  • Eckerd knocked down 13 3-pointers, the most in a game since also making 13 against Johnson C. Smith on November 24, 2017.
  • Eckerd shot 47.4 percent from the field while holding the Lions to a 32.0 field goal percentage.
