BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Eckerd volleyball team lost a late lead in its final road match of the season on Saturday, falling at Lynn University in five sets.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Lynn 3, Eckerd 2 (23-25, 28-26, 16-25, 25-21, 13-15)
Records: Eckerd 12-14 (4-12 SSC); Lynn 13-12 (6-9 SSC)
KEY MOMENTS
- Lynn jumped ahead early in the first set and maintained the lead until the Tritons won four straight points for a 21-21 tie. Â However, a service error got a vital side-out for the Fighting Knights, and a combination block followed to put Lynn back up by two. Â Eckerd managed to fend off set point on a Sarah Johnshoy kill but Lynn's Sonja Udovcic put away a kill to prevent the set from going into extra points.
- An early four-point run set the tone for Eckerd in the second set as the Tritons led by as many as six points and as late as 20-14. Â Lynn, however, won the next five points to pull within one and eventually tied the score at 24-24 after a pair of Eckerd errors extended the set. Â The Fighting Knights later reached set point at 26-25, but the Tritons rallied with two kills from Abbie O'Ferrell on both sides of a Rachel Wisian kill to even the match at one set each.
- Eckerd held an 8-6 lead in the third set, only to see Lynn win eight points in a nine-rally stretch to a 17-11 edge. Â After an Eckerd side-out, the Fighting Knights won five straight points and went on to a 25-16 win for a 2-1 lead.
- A tightly-contested fourth set saw 15 ties and 11 lead changes in the first 34 rallies as the two teams sat knotted at 17-17. Â The Tritons won the next four points on kills by O'Ferrell, Wisian, and Asya Harris, along with an O'Ferrell ace. Â Lynn got back within two but could not close the gap further, and Eckerd forced the decisive fifth set.
- The Tritons overcame an early deficit and held an 11-8 lead in the final set. Â However, a Lynn timeout killed EC's momentum. Â A service error led to a string of four straight points for the Fighting Knights. Â Eckerd briefly reclaimed the lead on back-to-back Johnshoy kills, but Lynn took the next three points to win the match.
