BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Eckerd women's basketball team held the lead for nearly 38 minutes on Wednesday night against Lynn University but the Fighting Knights changed that when it counted most, going ahead late in the game in a 68-65 defeat of the Tritons.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Lynn 68, Eckerd 65
Records: Eckerd 11-5 (5-4 SSC), Lynn 7-8 (3-5 SSC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tritons struck first on a 3-pointer by Yarden Danan less than a minute into the game, taking a lead they would not surrender until the fourth quarter. Â Lynn managed to stay close, trailing by one with 3:59 left in the first quarter, until a 14-2 Triton run closed the period.
- Eckerd stretched its lead to 14 points after a free throw by Zoe Richards began the second quarter, but the Fighting Knights rolled off nine unanswered points to cut the lead to five. Â Soon after, the hosts closed the gap to one point on two occasions before EC took a 34-31 lead into halftime.
- Lynn tied the game at 36-36 early in the third period before Eckerd went on a 16-5 run to retake control. Â The Tritons made six straight shots from the floor during the run, capped by an Armi Anttila jumper. Â A steal and off-balance last-second heave by Lynn's Jaylen Snipes cut EC's lead to 56-49 heading into the final quarter.
- A basket by Brooke Juday extended the Triton lead back to nine with 9:18 to play, but the team subsequently went cold from the floor. Â Eckerd made just one of its next 10 shots and turned the ball over six times, affording Lynn the opportunity to wrestle the lead away with 44 seconds to play.
- After missing a shot, the Tritons fouled Snipes who made one of two free throws. Â EC, however, missed twice on the next possession and again sent Lynn to the line where it again made one of two taking a four-point lead with seconds left. Chelsea Johnson drained a 3-pointer to pull EC within one, but Snipes made both free throws after being fouled on the inbounds pass and the Tritons were unable to launch a potential game-tying attempt.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Of Eckerd's five losses this season, four have come by four points or fewer.
- The Tritons held a plus-12 advantage on the boards but turned the ball over 19 times compared to 10 for Lynn.  EC's 19 miscues led to 22 points for the Fighting Knights. The Tritons have averaged 18.7 turnovers per game in their last three games, all of which have been losses.
- Kacie Juday snagged 12 rebounds and, in doing so, pulled in the 500th rebound of her career. Â She is the 13th player in program history to reach the plateau.
QUOTABLE
"It was a disappointing loss tonight. Â We are competing hard but not doing the little things to win games. Â I thought we rebounded great but we turned it over too much to win." - EC head coach
