BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Triton men's basketball team recovered from a slow start at Lynn on Wednesday night but the Fighting Knights closed a little stronger as Eckerd fell on the road, 78-74.
HOW IT ENDED
Final: Lynn 78, Eckerd 74
Records: Eckerd 13-3 (6-3 SSC), Lynn 7-7 (4-4 SSC)
All-Time Series: Eckerd leads, 29-16
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Paulius Zabilevicius was fouled on Eckerd's first possession and made one of two free throws to give EC what turned out to be its only lead of the first half. Lynn's Rasheed Warrell canned a jumper on the next trip down the floor as the Fighting Knights took a lead that they held for the remainder of the half. Â
- Lynn used an 8-0 run midway through the half to take an 11-point lead and still led by 10 with 1:23 left before Eckerd scored six unanswered points to cut the lead down to four by halftime.
- The Fighting Knights continued to hold a tenuous lead through the first eight minutes the second half until the Tritons went on a 9-0 run to move ahead, 56-54, with 10:07 to play. Â However, Lynn's Brandon Bornelius flipped the scoreboard again via a 3-pointer and the Knights kept the lead for the rest of the game. Â His shot triggered an 11-1 run - also capped by a Bornelius basket - that gave Lynn an eight-point edge with 7:00 left.
- Eckerd's last push saw the team get back within three at the 4:03 mark following a pair of Drushaun McLaurn baskets. Lynn, though, again answered the call with six unanswered points.  The Knights held a two-possession lead for the rest of the game.Â
NOTES AND NUMBERS
- Trevon Young's double-double streak came to an end at five games. Â Young scored 14 points but was limited to a season-low five rebounds.
- McLaurn's 28 points were his highest game total since scoring 33 against Pittsburg State (Kan.) on November 25.
- The Tritons were out-rebounded (40-36) for only the third time this season. Â Eckerd has lost all three of those games.
- Eckerd also shot an uncharacteristic 39.7 percent from the floor, the team's second-worst shooting performance of the season.
QUOTABLE
"We weren't as patient offensively as we needed to be. Â We made some quick plays late where we could have made an extra pass and maybe gotten a better shot. Lynn got a lot of offensive rebounds and loose balls in the second half when they needed to. They out-scrapped us." - EC head coach
Tom Ryan
