TAMPA, Fla. - The Eckerd women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday as the Tritons suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Tampa.
Eckerd's point came via
Joyce Fields in singles play. Â Fields took down Tampa's Emily Hewland in the No. 2 position, 6-2 and 6-4.
"I'm very pleased with Joyce's performance," said Eckerd head coach
Ben Maxwell. Â "She won a great match."
The Spartans (8-7, 3-6 SSC) took all three doubles contests in comfortable fashion before closing the victory with five singles victories.
Playing in her final match, EC's lone senior
Emily Fridrik hung close with Caroline Lozo at No. 1 singles in the first set before falling 6-3. Â Lozo then took a 6-0 win in the second set.Â
A young Eckerd (4-13, 0-9 SSC) squad experienced a trial-by-fire through the rigors of the challenging Sunshine State Conference schedule, but Maxwell was pleased with his team's toughness and progress throughout the year.
"It was a tough way to end a good season," he said. Â "We have things we need to improve on but I am really proud of the women. Â We fought through a lot of really tough matches and won some good ones. Â I thoroughly enjoy working with this team. Â It is a real pleasure."
