Young Leads Tritons to Road Win over Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Trevon Young led a group of five players scoring in double figures and reached a career milestone in the process as the Triton men's basketball team earned a 97-83 road win over Florida Tech on Saturday.

HOW IT ENDED
Final: Eckerd 97, Florida Tech 83
Records: Eckerd 8-1 (3-1 SSC); Florida Tech 3-6 (0-3 SSC)
All-Time Series: Eckerd leads, 61-32

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team could gain much of an edge in the first nine minutes of the game, with the lead changing hands 10 times before an 11-0 Eckerd run gave the Tritons an eight-point lead with 8:46 to go in the first half.  A 10-2 run followed shortly thereafter, highlighted by a pair of Travis Bianco 3-pointers, extending Eckerd's lead to 13 points (39-26) at the 5:20 mark.
  • The Panthers pulled back within seven, but the Tritons closed the half with two 3-pointers from Keshawn Ingram - the second of which beat the buzzer - to take a 51-39 lead at the break.
  • The Tritons continued to hold a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the second half, pushing ahead by as many as 18 after a Young layup with 11:39 left.  Florida Tech, behind the offense of Jordan Majors and Sam Daniel, managed to pull within eight points just three minutes later on the heels of a 13-3 run.  But Marco Behori sliced through the defense for a layup that kick-started eight unanswered points for Eckerd.  The Tritons finished the game scoring on eight of their last nine possessions to keep the game out of reach for Florida Tech.
NOTES AND NUMBERS
  • Young's jumper in the lane nine seconds into the second half added the senior to the Tritons' 1000-point club.  He entered the game needing 11 points and finished with a game-high 22.
  • The Tritons put five players in double figures in scoring: Young (22), Ingram (15), Bianco (14), Drushaun McLaurn (11) and Behori (11).  It marked the second time in the team's last three games for five players to score 10 or more points.
  • Today's game marked the Eckerd debut of transfer Kristiyan Stavrev, who scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Eckerd shot 61.2 percent from the field, the team's second-best shooting accuracy of the season.
  • The Tritons completely dominated on the boards, doubling up Florida Tech in rebounding by a 40-20 margin.
QUOTABLE
"We didn't want to give [Daniels and Majors] free opportunities, and they made some tough shots.  We wanted to control the boards and we did that.  We shared the ball much better tonight and we were almost always making the right pass." - EC head coach Tom Ryan

UP NEXT
The Tritons return to the McArthur Center next Saturday looking for their sixth win in a row as they host Palm Beach Atlantic at 4:00 PM.
