Tritons Edged by Florida Southern in 1-0 Loss

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The women's soccer team fell to conference opponent Florida Southern, 1-0, on Wednesday night in Eckerd's second home match of the season.

Florida Southern (1-2-1, 1-1 SSC) held possession early in the first half producing seven scoring chances before the match was delayed due to lightning in the area.

With a fresh start following the delay, the teams took the field with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half. Not long after the restart, the Tritons conceded the only goal of the match, drilled to the inside of the right post by Anna Griessler following a run through the Eckerd defense.

Eckerd (5-4, 1-2 SSC) produced several scoring chances, earning three corner kicks in the first four minutes of the second half. Despite the offensive push after halftime, Florida Southern continued to dominate possession throughout the remainder of the game.

Florida Southern held a 17-9 edge in shots in the match, though shots on goal were few and far between with six for the Mocs and four for Eckerd. Goalkeeper Casey Winn finished the night with five saves for the Tritons, leading the conference with 47 on the year.

Low-scoring contests have been a theme so far this season for the Tritons as six of their nine matches have resulted in a 1-0 finish.  EC is 3-3 in those games.

Veteran defenders Leah Chisolm and Jana Spengler were both out of the lineup tonight with minor injuries.

The Tritons will hit the road for a non-conference matchup against Embry-Riddle on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
