Eckerd Women's Tennis Victorious at Ave Maria, 7-2

AVE MARIA, Fla. - In its second match of the season, the Eckerd Tritons women's tennis team picked up its first win with a 7-2 victory over the Ave Maria Gyrenes thanks to impressive performances throughout the lineup.

EC (1-1) started off the day taking two of the three doubles matches. The first came from Laurence Bourgault and Isabella Wong at No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 win and was followed by an 8-4 victory by freshmen Gabrielle Hartman and Madeline Carlson at third doubles.

"Maddie and Gabby played really well in doubles and deserved the win," said EC head coach Ben Maxwell of his No. 3 doubles team.

He added that it was key to have the chance to head into singles with a point advantage which allowed the Tritons to focus on their way to taking five of the six singles matches, especially since Emily Fridrik had to fight through a nagging abdomen strain. Fridrik battled her way to a 6-1, 6-4 victory to remain perfect at first singles and put her team up 3-1.

Bourgault followed with 6-2, 6-0 win to put the Tritons one point away from a team victory. That soon came at the hands of MaryAnn Aaron in a come-from-behind three-set victory at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 10-1.

Maxwell complimented his team but now has his focus on the next match after a quick break.

"I'm happy with their performance today," he said. "We will have the weekend off and pick back up with practice on Monday to get ready for John Carroll."

That match is set to take place on Wednesday, March 2 as they play host to the Blue Streaks. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM at the Dick Bullard Courts.
