Tritons Edged by Tampa in 2-1 Overtime Loss

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. - After much anticipation leading up to the matchup against conference rival the University of Tampa, Eckerd was unable to hold onto a late lead and fell to the Spartans in overtime, 2-1.

The match was scoreless until the 71st minute when Kayla Gray found the back of the net after a misplayed clearance by Tampa keeper Caroline Frykgard. Gray controlled the ball just inside the 18-yard box and placed her shot in the left side netting, earning her fourth goal of the season.

With nine minutes to play in regulation, the Spartans scored the equalizer with a shot placed over the hands of freshman Casey Winn, forcing the match to overtime. Though Tampa (5-6-1, 3-2-1 SSC) kept the ball on Eckerd's half for a majority of the match, the Spartans were only able to produce six shots on goal.

Five minutes into the first overtime period, Tampa's Robyn-Anne Whittaker put the game away after a slotted pass from Meg Beidleman. The game-winning goal resulted in the Tritons' third loss in the Sunshine State Conference and extended Tampa's unbeaten streak to five matches.

Winn finished the night with four saves and sits in first place in the Sunshine State Conference with 74 total saves this season. Sydney Tiiman contributed four of Eckerd's six shots but was unable to finish.

The Tritons (5-7-2, 1-3-2 SSC) will face Lynn University at Turley Athletic Complex on Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Eckerd senior class will be honored prior to kickoff.
