Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Eckerd Triton volleyball team once again stayed close against a quality team on the road, but couldn't quite get over the hump.
On Saturday, the Tritons dropped a five-set decision to Barry University as the teams alternated set wins until the Bucs closed it out with a 15-8 victory in the final set.
A run of four straight points in the fifth set put Eckerd (5-6, 0-3 SSC) up by one before the Bucs came back to roll off six points in a row to take a 12-7 lead. A kill by
JaQuayla Baker broke the run, but Barry took the next three points to win the set and the match.
In the previous set, it was Eckerd that used a long run to take control as the Tritons took points on seven consecutive rallies and built a 15-8 lead. Barry got no closer than four points the rest of the set, and EC forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-18 win. The Tritons also took the second set, 25-21, behind five kills from
Tjasa Kotnik and three kills from Baker.
The Bucs (4-3, 2-1 SSC) won the opening set, 25-15, and the third set, 25-20, hitting .258 in those frames compared to .123 for Eckerd.
Attack percentage was also a factor in the final set as the Tritons hit -.087.
Kotnik led the Triton offense with 18 kills while Baker added 13 kills on 27 attempts.
Kaitlyn Sibson had 19 digs and recorded three service aces, as did
Emily Schadow. Baker led the defense at the net with six blocks.
Eckerd returns to the McArthur Center for a four-match home stand beginning on Friday, October 2, when No. 9 Florida Southern comes to St. Petersburg for a 7:00 PM contest.
