Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Every time they take the pitch, the Eckerd College Tritons prove themselves to be one of the top defensive teams in the conference - if not the nation.
Eckerd recorded its fourth shutout of the season and extended its unbeaten streak to six after scoring a 2-0 win over provisional Sunshine State Conference member Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Saturday night.
The Tritons' first shot resulted in a goal when
Richard Ainscough converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Ainscough was taken down in the box following a free kick as he received the second touch while moving toward the goal from the right side.
Eckerd (5-0-1) struck again with under 10 seconds left in the first half.
Nick Jackson took a through-ball in the middle of the box from
Wyeth Leemon as the final seconds ticked off the clock, worked to close range and fired a shot past ERAU keeper Jeff Bone to make it 2-0.
The Tritons almost added another goal early in the second half when Jackson collected a failed clearance in the box and had a one-on-one with Bone, but Bone slid out and smothered the ball before Jackson could strike.
The extra goal wasn't needed, however, as the Eckerd defense did its job. Several times, the Eagles (1-4) were able to push into the box but the Triton back line made it difficult for the hosts to get clear looks at the frame while limiting ERAU to only one shot in the second half.
On the rare occasion they did get a shot off, they couldn't get past
Alex Gott. The sophomore ended the night with three saves on his way to his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Eckerd held a narrow 9-8 edge in shots and placed six on goal to ERAU's three.
The Tritons return to the Turley Athletic Complex to host Rollins College on Saturday, October 3, at 7:00 PM.
