Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Eckerd College men's soccer team had to wait a little longer than expected to get a chance to play in Georgia.
Lightning and heavy rain forced the cancellation of their first scheduled match on Thursday but when the Tritons finally got to take the field, they made the most of the opportunity.
A
Matheus Assumpcao goal in the 14th minute turned out to be all Eckerd needed in a 1-0 win over the University of North Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
Juan David Tejada got the scoring run started by beating his defender down the left side. He then served a ball into the box to
Wyeth Leemon, who corralled the pass and fought through traffic to find Assumpcao alone at the near post. Assumpcao one-timed the ball into the net for what turned out to be the match's only score.
The Tritons assaulted the net in the first 20 minutes of the match, taking four shots on goal, but UNG was able to settle down and balance out the opportunities for the rest of the match though the EC defense made it tough for them to get many quality looks.
The Nighthawks narrowly out-shot Eckerd, 15-12, but the Tritons (2-0) created better chances with seven shots on goal against two for UNG (1-2-1).Â
Alex Gott stopped both shots he faced for the third clean sheet of his career.
The Tritons return to the pitch on Wednesday to host Webber International (Fla.) University at 4:30 PM.
