ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – After jumping out to an early lead in doubles action, the Eckerd College men's tennis team fell to Ferris State University in a non-conference matchup, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Tritons No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams took home early victories giving EC the edge heading into singles play. Freshman
Victor Appelqvist earned the lone singles victory from the No. 5 slot.
"The men gave themselves a fighting chance today taking an early 2-1 lead in doubles, but we couldn't pull out the victory," said Head Coach,
Ben Maxwell. "We fought extremely hard and I am so proud of our wins we took home today because the guys worked extremely hard for them."
At the No. 1 doubles slot,
Yosua Adiyasa and
Frazier Springfield earned their third victory of the year. The pair were evenly matched with the Bulldogs, but capitalized on their mistakes to take home the win, 8-4.
Eddie Lewis and
Connor Masella continue to play perfect from No. 3 doubles slot. The duo defeated Ferris State's Tyler Bridges and Zachary Grabovic in an extremely close match, 8-6, to remain undefeated on the season.
Heading into singles play with the lead, only one Triton was able to scrap out a victory.
Appelqvist now holds the team high of four singles wins on the year. The freshman took on Zachary Grabovic, defeating him in two consecutive set, 6-2, 6-2.
"Ferris State is a very good team and I am pleased with the effort we showed on the courts," added Maxwell.
Eckerd looks to take it easy in their workouts on Monday in preparation of a busy next five days. The team will host Merrimack College at the Dick Bullard Courts on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
