Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In a close ball game, the Eckerd College baseball team added a couple late runs to drop Thomas University on Tuesday night, 4-1.
Grant Banko led off the bottom of the second inning and promptly moved into scoring position by stealing second. Banko took third one batter late moving 90 feet closer to home.
Mike Abraham brought in Banko with a hard hit ball to the third basemen.
In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Andrew Don reached on a miscue by the Night Hawks defense. After two pitches, Don advanced to second base grabbing his first stolen base of the year. With Abraham at the plate, Don took off for third and with the ball sliding to the backstop he was able to come around and score.
Jack Silberman was dealing from the mound going 5.2 strong innings allowing just one run in the top of the sixth. The Tritons carried a thin 2-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
Starting off the inning with a double was
Lucas Luopa.
Carter Cashman hit a hot shot to the second baseman who could not handle the ball allowing Luopa to score and Cashman to reach first. The EC centerfielder crossed home on a wild pitch later in the inning to put his team up 4-1.
Nick Hill took over for Silberman in the sixth and allowed just two hits. The eighth and ninth innings saw the one two punch of
Kyle Harding and
Taylor Owens take the mound. Owens locked down the ninth earning his third save of the season in the 4-1 win.
Luopa collected two hits on the day scoring one run. Banko and Don both swiped two bags a piece while
Lorenzo Vazquez stole one.
Eckerd (12-6, 3-1) will get back to SSC play when the team travels to Boca Raton for a three game series with Lynn University. Game one is set for Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
