ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College women's tennis program matched up against one of the nation's toughest opponents to begin the 2015 season and Sunshine State Conference slate on Friday afternoon, falling to fifth-ranked Lynn University, 9-0.
"The women fought hard against a tough Lynn team today and I am extremely proud of everyone's efforts," said Head Coach,
Ben Maxwell.
"We will use the next few days to get ready for another tough SSC opponent on Tuesday," he added.
The Tritons (0-1, 0-1 SSC) have been preparing since early January and drew a tough match to open up with, facing the Fighting Knights (5-1, 1-1 SSC), who feature a 2014 ITA Collegiate All-Star.
Led by the previous Player of the Year Val Confalonieri, EC's
Gipson Hawn drew the daunting task of slowing her down in the No. 1 singles slot.
Carson Trapp and
Emily Fridrik contested Lynn's No. 2/3 singles in straight set finals.
The Fighting Knights were able to secure a shutout in the No. 2 doubles matchup while securing an 8-2 and 8-4 victory in the No. 1 and 3 slots.
The No. 4, 5, and 6 singles contests featured seniors

Katie Benn, and
Erika Fridrik whom battled three tough competitors from Lynn's decorated program.
Eckerd will now turn their focus toward No. 10 Florida Southern (0-2, 0-1 SSC). The teams will square off on the Dick Bullard Courts on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
