Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – After taking down Rollins College in overtime at home, the Eckerd College men's basketball team fell to the Tars on the road Saturday night, 70-59.
It took 13 seconds for
Kevin Walsh to put in the first bucket of the contest with a three. Rollins then answered with a three of their own.
Jerrick Stevenson quickly took a fast break opportunity down the court for two points. The battle was on with both teams fighting hard for the lead.
The Tars grabbed their largest lead of the first half with 4:49 remaining to go up by nine. A free throw from Walsh and a deep three from Stevenson brought Eckerd within five. With one minute on the clock,
Matt Beneduci knocked down a trey from the corner to go into the locker room down by two, 28-26.
Shane Phillips tipped in a Walsh three point attempt to tie it up 28-28 to start the final 20 minutes. Rollins then went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to jump out in front.
Malcolm Brunner Jr. and Benduci combined to score seven consecutive points making it a four point game.
Midway through the second half, the Tars grabbed their largest lead of the game going up by 13. Eckerd battled hard to get back within six with a minute and a half left in the game. That would be as close as they would get, falling on the road, 70-59.
Stevenson led the Tritons in scoring with 14 points while Beneduci set a career high totaling 12 points. Brunner Jr also finished in double digits with 11 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
Eckerd (11-12, 4-9) will host the top team in the nation in Florida Southern College (23-1, 11-1) on Wednesday. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
