Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's basketball team saw five players record double-digits in scoring as the Tritons held onto an 83-78 victory at Palm Beach Atlantic behind an aggressive rebounding performance.
"On regular nights, we can have five people in double figures," said EC head coach
Tom Ryan. "It can be a different five people on different nights."
On Saturday night, it was
E.J. Moody,
Obi Kyei,
Jerrick Stevenson,
Trevon Young and
Drushaun McLaurn as the five members to record at least 10 points for the Tritons (3-1, 1-0 SSC) in West Palm Beach, but Ryan believes his team's depth can see other players get into that mix as well.
"
Kevin Walsh was our leading scorer up in Alabama in our first game. He got into some foul trouble tonight, so that caught up with him but he's capable of scoring," Ryan said. "
Ray Darnell is just getting back healthy and is also capable of scoring. I think we're going to have some of these nights where we have multiple guys in double figures."
Stevenson led the Tritons with 16 points, but the balanced scoring threat was not the only high point for EC during the contest as the Tritons out-rebounded the Sailfish (1-3), 38-20, including a game-high eight rebounds by Kyei. Among those 38 rebounds were 12 offensive rebounds, which led to 22 second-chance points for Eckerd opposed to just two for PBAU.
Despite the dominating presence on the boards, the Tritons found themselves unable to pull away due in part to 21 turnovers, leading to 16 fast-break points for PBAU.
"Our rebounding was good tonight and we shot the ball well," Ryan said. "But if we don't take care of the ball it will catch up to us."
Eckerd hit 8-of-10 free throws during the final minute and a half of the contest to seal the victory.
The Tritons will return to action on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:30 PM when Franklin (Ind.) College enters the McArthur Center.
