Tritons Finish Strong to Open Season with Win at GSC-SSC Challenge

Box Score ALBANY, Ga. - The Eckerd College women's basketball team may have entered the 2015-16 season a little short on experience, but the Tritons certainly performed like an experienced team down the stretch in their season-opener on Saturday.

The Tritons rallied from a seven-point deficit with under four minutes to play, turning it into a late four-point lead on the way to a 54-52 win over the University of West Georgia at the GSC-SSC Challenge at Darton State (Ga.) College.

Eckerd (1-0) led 23-18 at halftime, but saw the lead disappear throughout the second half before making its final run.

Senior Margaret Sundberg was key in the comeback, scoring seven points in the final four minutes with a 3-pointer and two running floaters. Victoria Vine also drained a deep 3-pointer from the corner as part of the rally.

Elisabeth Giegerich then made two free throws to put the Tritons ahead for good as they hung on for the win.

"We had very little to prepare on with it being the first game and the fact that West Georgia had so many new players," said EC head coach Paul Honsinger. "I'm really proud of the team for closing out the game strong and playing with poise. We hit big shots down the stretch and defended when we needed to."

Complete statistics from the game were not available due to a computer malfunction.

The Tritons return to the floor tomorrow facing Valdosta State (Ga.) at 6:00 PM.
